When life turns full circle, you imagine you will find stability back in the place where you grew up. But what if it is not just you that has changed?
Country Roads is a light-hearted drama series about modern rural life, set in the beautiful sun-drenched countryside of East Holland. But this is not the countryside of twenty years ago; even the small village of Twente has had to move with the times, for better or worse, leaving its close-knit community facing many challenges.
Fenna Wildspieker is a successful journalist living in the city with her soon-to-be ex-husband and daughter. However, everything changes when her father dies and her divorce comes through, leaving her homeless. Begrudgingly, Fenna leaves her city life and returns to hometown Twente to help her widowed mother Aeltjen (64) run the family farm.
Gradually, Fenna realises that the narrow-minded farming community she escaped from twenty years ago has changed. There's still that sense of kinship, but now the women talk about plastic surgery and the men are either turning women into prostitutes, or every tree into concrete! Fenna barely recognises the place.
Meanwhile, her ambitious brother Lous is struggling to forge his career and fund his wife's shopping habit and youngest sister Monkie, a coach for the local soccer team, is faced with caring for her wheel-chair bound boyfriend. Then there's the Bode family, riddled with infidelity and an abundance of money, which only serves to expose the destructive nature of their teenage children.
By rediscovering her roots, Fenna is also able to reclaim a part of her that's been missing, reassured by the presence of her late father, to whom she turns when everything gets too much.
Combining rural problems with modern day dilemmas, this series presents a realistic portrait of modern country life that's destined to find a place in viewers' hearts.
