Grijpstra is in his forties, married, a father. He's a quiet, somewhat gloomy man whose career-orientated wife expects him to do the household chores. De Gier is in his thirties and single. He's impulsive with a zest for life whose only responsibility is to his cat. Without ever mentioning it, they envy each other's lifestyle. Grijpstra is jealous of De Gier's uncommitted way of life, and De Gier envies the family ties that bind Grijpstra.
At the police station where they work, there's murder cases to solve and personal problems to overcome. There is the young detective Cardozo, who graduated from the academy with impressing grades. The detectives usually rely on him to do the groundwork for their cases. In charge is The Chief, an aging man whose arthritis has prevented him from making the most of his career. How does he feel about the younger men, their lives and their ambitions? Then there is Hetty, the secretary, a new member of the team and an attractive girl who hasn't yet met her man.
